Role: Editorial Director, Newsletters

The Britannica Group owns two of the world’s most valuable and trusted sources of knowledge: Encyclopaedia Britannica (established 1768) and Merriam-Webster (established 1825). Now, as digital-first brands, they serve a global audience of more than 2 billion users on the web, apps, and social media.

Encyclopædia Britannica is a global educational publisher with products that promote knowledge and learning. We provide timely, relevant, and trustworthy information and instructional products used in schools, universities, homes, libraries, and workplaces throughout the world. Responsibilities: The director will be a dynamic leader who drives the editorial efforts for Britannica and Merriam-Webster’s newsletter businesses. They will be both a digital strategist and a skilled wordsmith, able to project a cohesive vision for our newsletters, define Britannica’s editorial voice in this space, and build a thriving, dedicated audience who engages with us each day in their inboxes.

Specifically, the director will oversee the editorial aspect of all newsletters, from conception to launch and throughout their lifecycles. They will maintain the highest level of editorial quality and ensure our newsletters ably represent Britannica’s longstanding reputation as the world’s trusted source of knowledge and information. They will also be a font of ideas, possess a modern metabolism, and bring a lively, accessible voice to our newsletters that resonate with audiences today.

The director will build and manage a small unit of newsletter editors and will also work across our broader editorial teams to harness the full knowledge and abilities of our operation. Additionally, the director will be a vital touchpoint for our marketing, product, design, sales, and technology teams on cross-functional matters. The director will help define KPIs for success, and bring a culture of testing, iteration, and constant improvement to our approach.

Location: Chicagoland/Hybrid/Light Travel. *Can be remote for out of state applicants.

Qualifications:

  • At least 3+ years in a senior newsletter role at a major publication.
  • At least 10+ years of editorial experience.
  • Proven ability to conceive, launch, and grow an audience for a suite of newsletters, including a major flagship product.
  • Prior management experience, including hiring and performance evaluations.
  • Ability to use Google Analytics or another leading metrics tool.

Skills & knowledge:

  • Superior writing and editing skills.
  • Knowledge of e-mail service providers, including building and updating templates and managing campaigns.
  • Understanding of audience analytics and how to define KPIs.
  • Excellent collaboration skills, and the ability to interact with a variety of stakeholders in different departments.
  • Strong leadership abilities and experience building and managing a team.
  • A wide range of knowledge and curiosity.

Candidates should submit a cover letter and resume as one document. Britannica Group is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Britannica strives to provide its users with trustworthy, verified information in a constantly changing world. We aspire to fulfill that mission with a diverse, multigenerational workforce who represent a variety of life experiences and points of view. All backgrounds and cultures are welcome.
