Job Summary:
The Registered Nurse (RN) – Pediatric PACU is responsible for providing high-quality, compassionate, and family-centered care to pediatric patients recovering from anesthesia following surgical or diagnostic procedures. The RN will assess, monitor, and manage the patient’s condition during the post-anesthesia period, ensuring a safe transition to the next phase of recovery.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Provide direct nursing care to pediatric patients in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
- Assess patients upon admission to the unit, monitoring vital signs, pain levels, and airway management.
- Administer prescribed medications and treatments per physician orders and protocols.
- Recognize and respond promptly to signs of complications or adverse reactions related to anesthesia or surgery.
- Collaborate closely with anesthesiologists, surgeons, and other members of the healthcare team to ensure safe and effective patient care.
- Provide emotional support and education to patients and families regarding the recovery process.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and thorough documentation in the EPIC electronic health record system.
- Participate in ongoing quality improvement and patient safety initiatives within the department.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS - Strong pediatric assessment and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to respond rapidly in emergency situations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for family-centered care.
- Proficiency in EPIC charting system preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced acute care environment.
REQUIREMENTS - Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing (BSN not required).
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years of recent PACU or pediatric critical care experience.
- Licensure: Active RN license in the state of New York.
- Certifications: BLS, ACLS, and PALS (AHA or ARC required).
